The Albanian Riviera isn't one place — it's a string of very different towns along the Ionian coast. Pick the wrong base and you'll spend your holiday driving. Here's how Vlora, Dhërmi, Himara, Saranda and Ksamil compare, with drive times from Tirana Airport.
Vlora — the gateway
Where the Adriatic meets the Ionian, Vlora is the closest Riviera city to the airport (~145 km, about 2 hours). It's a proper working city with a long promenade — good for a first or last night, or an easier-to-reach base if you don't want the full southern drive.
Dhërmi — the scenery
Dhërmi (~215 km) sits just below the dramatic Llogara Pass: clear-water pebble beaches, white villages on the hillside and a lively summer beach-club scene. Best for travellers who want the postcard Riviera without going all the way south.
Himara — the balance
Himara (~230 km) is the relaxed middle option — a small town with lovely coves (Livadhi, Llamani), a castle and a slower pace. A good pick for couples and families who want beaches plus a real town.
Saranda — the hub
Saranda (~285 km) is the Riviera's liveliest base, a bay town opposite Corfu with the daily ferry, plenty of hotels and restaurants, and Butrint and the Blue Eye nearby. Best if you want nightlife, choice and a jumping-off point for day trips.
Ksamil — the beaches
Ksamil (~300 km), 15 km south of Saranda, is the "Albanian Maldives": turquoise water and little islands you can swim to. It's the most beach-focused base of all — quieter than Saranda in the evenings, and the reason many people come to Albania at all.
Getting there
All five are a private door-to-door transfer from Tirana Airport — no train, and buses rarely match flight times. Get an instant quote on the home page, or see the full Riviera transfer guide.
