Saranda and Ksamil sit just 15 km apart at the southern end of the Albanian Riviera, opposite Corfu — but they make for very different holidays. Here's how to choose, and how to get to each from Tirana Airport.
The quick answer
- Choose Saranda for a lively town base: a long promenade, lots of hotels and restaurants, nightlife, and easy day trips (Butrint, the Blue Eye, Corfu by ferry).
- Choose Ksamil for the beaches themselves: turquoise water, small white-sand bays and little islands you can swim to. Quieter at night, busier on the sand in peak summer.
Beaches
Ksamil wins on sheer beach beauty — its islets and shallow, clear water are the postcard image of Albania. Saranda's town beaches are pleasant but smaller and more urban; many Saranda guests take a short trip down to Ksamil for a beach day anyway.
Nightlife & dining
Saranda is the clear choice for evenings out — its waterfront is packed with bars and seafood restaurants. Ksamil has plenty of beach clubs and tavernas, but it winds down earlier.
Families vs couples
Families often prefer Ksamil's calm, shallow bays. Couples and groups who want both beach and buzz tend to base in Saranda and day-trip to Ksamil. Either way the two are a 20-minute drive apart, so you're never far from the other.
Getting there from Tirana Airport
Both are a long but scenic drive south over the Llogara Pass:
- Tirana Airport to Saranda — ~285 km, about 4h–4h 30m.
- Tirana Airport to Ksamil — ~300 km, about 4h 30m–5h.
Because Ksamil is small with tight lanes and tough summer parking, a private door-to-door transfer that knows the area saves a lot of hassle on arrival.
