Where is Theth, and how far from Tirana Airport?
Theth sits in a glacial valley in the far north, about 160 km from Tirana International Airport (TIA). The journey is two very different halves: a fast run up the SH1 to Shkodër (around 1½ hours), then a slow, spectacular mountain road over the pass into the valley. Allow 3½ to 4 hours in total. When to go
Theth is a summer destination. The road and guesthouses are best from late May to early October; outside that window snow can close the pass, so always check before booking an off-season trip. July and August are busiest and warmest; June and September are quieter and ideal for hiking.
The Theth–Valbona hike
The classic Albanian Alps experience is the day hike between Theth and Valbona — a high mountain crossing of around 6–8 hours with a col at roughly 1,800 m. Most walkers do it one way and return via the Koman Lake ferry, one of the most beautiful boat rides in the Balkans. Getting there without the stress
There is no public transport that lines up with flight arrivals, and self-driving the pass in a hire car is not for the faint-hearted.
