The Albanian Riviera — Saranda, Ksamil, Himara, Dhërmi and the beaches around Vlora — is the reason most people fly into Albania. The catch: almost everyone lands at Tirana International Airport (TIA / Nënë Tereza), and the Riviera starts about 150 km south and runs to nearly 300 km. Here is how to bridge that gap.
How far is the Riviera from Tirana Airport?
The coast unfolds from north to south. Rough road distances and drive times from TIA:
- Vlora — ~155 km, around 2h 15m. The gateway to the Riviera.
- Dhërmi — ~215 km, around 3h, over the Llogara Pass.
- Himara — ~220 km, around 3h 15m.
- Saranda — ~285 km, around 4h–4h 30m.
- Ksamil — ~300 km, around 4h 30m–5h, the southern tip.
Your options from the airport
1. Private transfer (simplest)
A pre-booked private car or van meets you at arrivals and drives you door-to-door to your hotel. There's no train to the Riviera and bus connections rarely line up with flight times, so for most travellers this is the realistic option — especially with luggage, children, or a late arrival.
2. Bus via Tirana or Vlora
Budget travellers can take a bus from Tirana to Vlora or Saranda, but you first need to get from the airport into the city, then connect — a half-day affair with fixed departure times. Doable, not relaxing.
3. Self-drive
Renting a car gives freedom, but the SH8 coastal road and the Llogara Pass are mountainous and slow, and summer parking in Ksamil and Dhërmi is genuinely difficult. Many visitors prefer to arrive by transfer and rent locally if needed.
The drive itself
The route runs south on the SH4 through Lushnjë and Fier, joins the coast at Vlora, then climbs the Llogara Pass — a pine-forested mountain road that opens onto a sweeping view of the Ionian Sea. It's one of Europe's great coastal drives. On a private transfer you can ask for a short photo stop at the top; most of our guests do.
