Albania's coast is a summer star, but the shoulder seasons are arguably better value and just as beautiful. Here's a month-by-month look at weather, crowds and sea temperature — and how the season affects your airport transfer.
Season by season
Peak summer — July & August
Hot (30–35°C), warm sea, and every beach at its busiest. Ksamil, Dhërmi and Golem fill up; book accommodation and transfers early. Roads to the Riviera are at their slowest on summer weekends, so allow extra time.
Best value — late May, June & September
This is the sweet spot: warm enough to swim (the sea is often warmest in September), long sunny days, lower prices and far thinner crowds. Transfers run faster too, without peak traffic around Durrës and Fier.
Quiet shoulder — April & October
Mild and green, ideal for sightseeing (Butrint, Berat, the Llogara Pass) and city beaches like Durrës. Some Riviera beach clubs are closed, but the scenery and value are excellent.
Winter — November to March
Cool and quieter; the coast is sleepy but Tirana, Shkodër and cultural sites are very doable. Transfers operate year-round.
Sea temperature, roughly
- June: ~22–24°C — comfortable.
- July–August: ~25–27°C — warmest crowds, warm water.
- September: ~24–25°C — often the nicest swimming of the year.
- October: ~21–22°C — still swimmable early in the month.
How the season changes your transfer
In July and August, traffic around Durrës and the Riviera coast road adds time — a Saranda transfer can run closer to 4h 30m, and Ksamil's lanes get congested. Booking a private transfer in advance matters most in peak season, when airport taxis are stretched. In the shoulder months the same drives are noticeably quicker.
